2018 Symposium 20 to 22 July plus extras!

The Symposium is a great opportunity to develop your paddling and experience some of the stunning Shetland coastline.  We have people coming up from Thursday 19 July and staying until Monday 30 July, and there’s usually a trip going somewhere to suit different tastes.

Booking opens 15 October 2017, there’s been a lot of interest so be quick in getting your forms back to us please! All questions and  queries to shetlandsymposium2018@yahoo.com .

THE SYMPOSIUM IS CURRENTLY FULLY BOOKED. PLEASE EMAIL TO BE ADDED TO THE WANTING LIST. THANK YOU

This year we will be based at Voxter House near Brae in the North Mainland of Shetland. It’s a great site with plenty of good camping ground as well as the building itself offering seriously good facilities for any group of kayakers coming to the Isles. Accommodation will be available for the week after, book through the symposium team using the Voxter form above.

Our visiting coaches are going to be

Kim Bull

Kate Duffus

Pat Murray

Andrew Barras

Matt Haydock

Bonnie Perry and

Mike McClure

Plus we have our own talented coaching Father and Daughter pair Angus and Catriona Nicol from local guiding firm Sea Kayak Shetland. Check out their facebook page and website if your not familiar with their names.

Some of the coaching sessions on offer:

  • With Kate we have rock hopping and incident management, boat control in windy weather (possibly with some towing and rescues thrown in to keep you on your toes) and group management/leadership skills.
  • With Bonnie we have rock hopping, 3* paddle techniques and improving your forward paddling with boat friendly (awkward) landings.
  • With Angus we have practical trip planning with on the move coaching and scenarios.
  • With Kim we have foundation safety and rescue training
  • With Catriona we have wet sessions covering self rescues and other wet skills.
  • With Mike we have tidal navigation and practice, and
  • With Pat we have a paddle skills clinic and paddling after 3*

Not all sessions have been finalised and, as we’re sure everyone will appreciate, may change depending on demand and weather.

This year our meals are being provided by the Mid Brae Inn and will be at the Brae Hall

Friday night is a buffet with lots of dishes for both meat eaters and vegans/vegetarians.
Saturday night is a choice of beef lasagna + garlic bread, fish pie, veggie curry + rice and side dishes of veg, coleslaw + mashed tatties.
Sunday night is a choice of roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, chicken stuffed with haggis, roast pork loin, veggie lasagna + garlic bread and side dishes of mashed tatties + veg.

We are planning to run some sea kayak qualification training and assessments before and after the symposium. We are hoping to run 4* training before the symposium and 4* assessment after the symposium. We are also potentially planning 3* training and assessments days.

If you are interested in taking part in any of the above please let us know by emailing shetlandsymposium2018@yahoo.com

Please note – there is no bar on site. In Brae there is a small Co-op store and a number of pubs and eateries.  Lerwick is approx 25 miles south.
