2020 Symposium

The Symposium is a great opportunity to develop your paddling and experience some of the stunning Shetland coastline.  We have people coming up from Thursday 16 July and staying until Monday 27 July, and there’s usually a trip going somewhere to suit different tastes.

Booking opens 20th October 2019 at midnight, there’s been a lot of interest so be quick in getting your forms back to us please! All questions and  queries to shetlandsymposium2018@yahoo.com .

THE SYMPOSIUM IS CURRENTLY FULLY BOOKED.

PLEASE EMAIL TO BE ADDED TO THE WANTING LIST. THANK YOU

This year we will be based at Voxter House near Brae in the North Mainland of Shetland. It’s a great site with plenty of good camping ground as well as the building itself offering seriously good facilities for any group of kayakers coming to the Isles. Accommodation will be available for the week after, book through the symposium team using the email address above.

Our visiting coaches are going to be

Kate Duffus

Andrew Barras

Michael Madera

Greg Lengrand

Dave Rossetter

Anna Bernat

Calum Mcnicol

Sue Couling

Bonnie Perry and

Natalie Maderova

Plus we have our own local coaches,  Angus Nicol, Rachel Shucksmith, Catriona Sim and Rosalind Nicol. Trips are available after the symposium with Angus Nicol angus@seakayakshetland.co.uk and Kate Duffus kateduffus@live.co.uk

Some of the coaching sessions on offer:

  • Rock hopping
  • Incident Management
  • Boat control in windy weather (possibly with some towing and rescues thrown in to keep you on your toes)
  • Group management/leadership skills
  • Navigation and practice
  • Paddle skills clinics

Not all sessions have been finalised and, as we’re sure everyone will appreciate, may change depending on demand and weather.

This year our meals are being provided by the Mid Brae Inn and will be at the Brae Hall

We are planning to run some sea kayak qualification training and assessments before and after the symposium. We are running CNTP and Sea Kayak Leader training before the symposium and Sea Kayak Leader assessment after the symposium.

If you are interested in taking part in any of the above please let us know by emailing shetlandsymposium2018@yahoo.com

Please note – there is no bar on site. In Brae there is a small Co-op store and a number of pubs and eateries.  Lerwick is approx 25 miles south.
