Shetland Canoe Club is based in the Shetland Islands, and is therefore Britain’s most northerly canoe club. We are mainly a sea kayaking club, with most of our activities geared to touring, though some members have been known to try surfing, not to mention the odd visit to the mainland for a bit of river paddling.
The club is run entirely by volunteers with a committee and a large number of helpers giving up valuable time to run the club.
The club runs as a recreational club under affliation to the Scottish Canoe Club which is a member of the British Canoe Union. All members pay an annual membership either as boat owner or non boat owner. Only Shetland Canoe Club members are entitiled to use club equipment under club rules. We do not hire out equipment and do not operate on a commercial basis.
The club during the summer organises a programme of short trips on Tuesday evenings and a longer trip most Sundays or Saturdays depending on availability and weather. The club organises annual weekend meets at Yell and Unst, and the Shetland Sea Kayak Symposium which happens every second year.
The club has a training session every Thursday evening in summer at Bridge End Outdoor Centre in Burra Isle, and most Thursdays in winter in the Clickimin Pool in Lerwick. Every year in March the club holds an open night for new members in the Clickimin Pool followed by a programme of training, starting in the pool and moving on to the sea at Bridge End after Easter. This is the best time for beginners to join. Experienced paddlers are welcome at any time.
