    Shetland Symposium 2010

    Symposium Updates – 2010

Well guys it’s all over now but what a great time we all had.  I ,on behalf of the Shetland Canoe Club, would like to thank everyone who came up to Shetland to attend the Symposium, it’s a long way to come,  and for those who were able to stay on for the Unst weekend were able to do a lot of our local paddles along with some of the club members. We must not forget all the coaches Trys, Phil, Martin, Claire and Roy who had some challenging weather to compete with over the weekend but they all did an execellent  job of coaching everyone and they enjoyed it too which is good.  A lot of new friends were made over the weekend so do not be strangers if you come up to Shetland any time. Let  us know as it’s always great to paddle with  friends.

There are plenty of pictures being posted so thanks to those who have taken the trouble as it is good to see them and bring back some nice memories. I would also like to thank those who sent e-mails  saying nice things about us they are much appreciated. We will be putting an article in the SCA magazine in the next issue so look out for that . Meantime the weather has been much the same since you all went home  so not going to be the best summer still it will not stop us from  paddling around the Isles. Please check out the web site for any future events.

    Happy Paddling everyone

    Shetland Sea Kayak Symposium July 2nd – 5th 2010

The closing date has now passed and we are still very busy getting everything organised for the Symposium  but we are nearly there.  Flights are booked , food ordered but haven’t booked the weather yet fingers crossed it will be kind to us.  Should be able to get a draft programme up soon once I hear back from the contributors .   Will put some maps on the site to show you how to get to Bridge End and where the supermarkets are for food and where you can buy fuel. Have put up a wild life leaflet up on the site to give you an idea of what you will see on your trips around the isles.  If any of you were watching Simon Kings programmes earlier this year you will probably have a good idea anyway.

    Previous report

Sorry  for the lack of information to date but still busy trying to organise contributors and caterers, not an easy job, so I am reluctant to give out too much information at present in case I have to make changes . We would also like to keep costs as near to 2008 as possible as we are aware of the expense of travelling up to Shetland  and do not want to make the whole event too costly for you all.   I am confident of a good line up for you  as the contributors are always keen to come to Shetland and we do have on offer amazing places to kayak and the wildlife and scenery is something else . Us locals do not take it for granted as the weather is always there to make a statement but on numerous occasions she give in to us and we have spectacular trips and the nicest part is sharing it with others. We are big show-offs at hear as we love paddling around the Isles. Even if you do the same trip a number of times it is never the same.

For those of you who have not yet made your minds up, from reading the SCA calendar,  a number of visitors are staying up for the following week, as quite a number of club members take that week off to do trips with everyone,  as  the club is hosting a club trip to Unst, see other section on the site, on the following week-end. Unst is a very special place and to not go there to paddle whilst you are here would leave a gap in your life. Even if the weather turns horrible it is still a place to see and discover spectacular scenery and amazing wildlife . A walk to Hermaness to see the bird life and see Muckle Flugga from the shore is very special. You may even be lucky to paddle there.

    Bye for now
